Create your “Word of the Year”

Hey Gal! Happy Monday!

As we start approaching the end of the year, I want you to take a moment and reflect on this past year—did you reach any important goals? Did you have extremely happy moments? What challenges did you face? Do you regret anything? What lessons have you learned? What are you leaving behind? In what ways did you grow? What are you looking forward to?

Now that you've taken a minute to look back, allow me to introduce, or maybe remind you of, the empowering practice of choosing your “Word of the Year.”

What is a 'Word of the Year?'

As the new year inches closer and closer, it's an ideal time for us to center our thoughts on our aspirations, personal growth, and the hopes we hold for 2024. I think it's safe to say that most of us have heard the phrase 'New Year's Resolutions,' but I've come to believe that this approach can often be problematic and, consequently, lead to unfulfilled intentions. I think resolutions tend to come with unrealistic expectations, an all-or-nothing mentality and guilt when not accomplished. That's why I love the concept of a 'Word of the Year.'

A 'Word of the Year” is essentially a word, or even phrase, that you choose to represent your intentions, hopes and the direction you want your life to take during the upcoming year. This word acts as a focal point, helping you stay focused on reaching your goals, honoring your values and prioritizing personal growth.

Here are some 'Word of the Year' Ideas

Now, choosing your 'Word of the Year' is extremely personal. This word should be specific to your circumstances, goals and priorities. The idea is that you keep this word at the back of your mind, using it as a source of motivation and as a reminder when you feel yourself getting off track. While this word should hold personal significance, I understand if it feels difficult and overwhelming to choose one word.

So, here are some ideas for words:

  • Calm

  • Balance

  • Simplify

  • Focus

  • Mindfulness

  • Boundaries

  • Abundance

  • Learn

  • Kindness

  • Optimism

  • Connection

  • Clarity

  • Authenticity

From our intern Emily: “My 'Word of the Year' for 2024 is going to be “simplify.” I want to hone in on managing my stress and decluttering my physical space as well as my mind. I want to stop taking on too many responsibilities and instead focus on a few that fulfill me, so I can invest my full energy. I've chosen the word 'simplify' as my compass, guiding me in the direction of personal growth and allowing me to continue working towards becoming the best version of myself.”
