HER STORY ⟡ Alex Esarey

Today, we are meeting Alex Esarey of Beautycounter!

Beautycounter is a clean beauty brand. Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone, through formulating high-performing products, and advocating on a national level for industry-wide change.

Why I started - was there a specific moment or experience that sparked your entrepreneurial journey? :

The question: "have you heard of the EWG?". (The EWG ranks everyday products on their safety score). I ended up sitting in front of my bathroom vanity pulling everything out I own, scanning one item at a time. I realized that although I had been buying my products from "natural" stores (like Whole Foods and Lush), they were actually incredibly toxic and damaging not only my skin, but my hormones as well. I haven't looked back!

What impact do you hope to make through your business?

I want to help folks switch to safer products that will help them look and feel confident in their own skin!

What is your favorite piece of advice you've ever received (or favorite quote)?

I'm a geek, right? A Doctor Who quote that stuck with me is, “We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?"

How do you handle self-doubt and maintain confidence in your entrepreneurial journey?

Everytime I get a message saying, "My skin is glowing!", or "Beautycounter cleared up my skin and gave me back confidence in myself"; or "I can walk out the door with no makeup if I want and still feel beautiful!" - I know I'm doing the right thing.

How do you continue to learn and grow as a business owner?

I am fortunate that Beautycounter offers me weekly small group and 1:1 mentoring, in addition to company-wide training.  I'm also a huge bookworm and do read business books, as well. (I'm not a podcast listener, though; I just don't have the focus!)

What does BEAUTY mean to you?

Beauty is your INNER SPARK.

What advice would you give your past self just starting your business or to a woman wishing to start her own entrepreneurial journey?

What's the worst thing that could happen? Give it a try and see what happens.

What practices and rituals do you have that helps you create harmony/balance in your life & business?

Being a primarily online business, it's really easy to always be "ON" and available for work. So I really try to hold my boundaries; I don't answer work related questions after certain times of the day, and make sure my clients know who to call when I'm out of office and on vacation. (In other words; when I'm working, I'm working; when I'm out, I'm out!).
