HER STORY ⟡ Amanda Kleckley
Today, we are meeting Amanda Kleckley!
Tell us about you and your background!
I live in Pearland, TX, just south of downtown Houston, with my husband of 18 years, three kids, and two Maltese puppies. When I’m not helping clients find safer skincare solutions, you can find me playing "mom taxi," cooking, or enjoying the outdoors.
About 10 years ago, I embarked on a journey to health and wellness. After looking into the food our family was consuming, this soon extended to household items and personal care products. It was through this wellness journey that I later discovered Beautycounter, a clean beauty brand with a mission to bring safer products into the hands of everyone.
Why I started:
The more I researched product ingredients and the harmful effects some could have on on our health, the more I began to share my research with friends and family. I realized that people were interested in switching to safer alternatives but felt overwhelmed by the process and didn't know where to start or what to look for. I made it my mission to help guide others on the same journey. For example, it is not common knowledge that the word “fragrance” on a label could contain up to 3,000 ingredients, most of which have never been tested for human safety (look up the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act).
Beautycounter became my vehicle to share the need for safer ingredients. Once I realized that I didn't have to sacrifice safety for high-performing products, I helped others do the same. I was impressed with Beautycounter’s commitment to advocacy, sourcing, and transparency. I joined Beautycounter as a brand advocate six years ago, and have never looked back!
What I love about Beautycounter:
One of the things that makes Beautycounter unique is our collaboration with members of Congress to advocate for safer beauty laws. Last spring, I led a group of Brand Advocates in a meeting with Houston Congressman Al Green's office to express our support for the Better Beauty Bill Package, which is set to be introduced to Congress later this year. Beautycounter also maintains unparalleled sourcing practices to ensure an ethical supply chain.
What type of impact do you hope to have on those you meet and/or who purchase your products?
I would love to empower others and give them the confidence to make their own educated decisions about the products they use. My goal is always to help women and men feel more confident in their skin.
What is your favorite piece of advice you've ever received or favorite quote?
"Make good choices 80% of the time to make up for the 20% you can’t control." For those attempting to lead a healthy or non-toxic lifestyle, it can be overwhelming to strive for perfection. I live by the 80/20 rule and advise my customers to do the same. Know better, do better, but don't worry about being perfect!
What does BEAUTY mean to you?
Beauty means having the confidence to be yourself.
What advice would you give your past self just starting your business?
Just enjoy it and show up! Don’t worry about having a perfect social media feed, or the perfect things to say. Good intentions will shine through!
