HER STORY ⟡ Amy Schultz
I’m Amy, Co-Founder and Head Coach at Bolder Money. We’re a company on a mission to close the gender wealth gap, and our team of money coaches has helped our clients with everything from negotiating better job offers to learning how to invest to paying off credit card debt. I grew up in Cleveland and fell into entrepreneurship as a way to help other women avoid the pain I felt around money in my twenties.
How I started:
In 2018, I was emotionally ready to make a drastic career change, but was financially underprepared to leave my steady salary behind. Although I had been making a healthy income for years, I had nothing to show for it: no emergency fund, mountains of credit card debt, and the only savings to my name in my 401k.
I felt trapped, and backed into a corner (and the wrong life). With a firm belief that I was on the right path and that I would be able to help women avoid the financial stress I had felt for so long while earning the money I needed, I emptied my 401k to start my first money coaching business. It was a terrifying, lonely decision that left me feeling angry at myself for being underprepared financially and at the world for not giving me the education I needed to make better choices with my money throughout my early career.
I spent a few years coaching women to use their money to build the life they really wanted, and while it was extremely fulfilling, I knew there was a bigger impact to be made. Through Bolder Money, I now have a team of money coaches guiding hundreds of women at once to get out of debt, build their savings, and ultimately follow their dreams with their money. And we’re just getting started.
What I love about owning a startup:
Every day is different, and our mission drives everything we do. Our team switches gears quickly to focus on a new challenge, or launch a new product feature, and in the same Slack channel we’re celebrating one of our clients finding a new job, or paying off a credit card, or buying a house. It’s a dream come true to see a business built around the love we have for our clients.
How I stay inspired:
I am most inspired when I see the self-permission and self-advocacy that shaped my own story reflected in the eyes of the women I meet. I have many, many conversations every day in which I show up authentically and vulnerably: I believe this is the deepest power we hold as women business owners, and I can’t wait to see what happens as more companies are built on a deeper level of connection and empathy.
