Today, we are meeting Marylee Marre of Marylee Marre Functional Medicine!
Tell us about you and your background!
I am a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with a focus in functional and integrative medicine. I have been in the medical field for 11 years, spending 7 of those years in the emergency department and critical care settings at renown hospitals across the country. I am affiliated with the New York Center for Integrative Health in New York City where I completed a rigorous mentorship program with renowned Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Robert Kachko.
My background in western medicine created a very strong foundation; however, the western medicine model has its own set of limitations when it comes to optimizing health, investigating difficult-to-diagnose symptoms and preventing and treating chronic conditions. I was discouraged by the endless "band-aid" approach and felt a burning desire to change the way I practiced in order to provide more impactful care for my patients. As a result, I began implementing a root-cause approach to identify the reasons why my patients were feeling the way they were and treating those causes such as environmental toxicants (mold, plastics, heavy metals, parabens, herbicides, etc.), adrenal dysfunction, gut dysbiosis, micronutrient deficiencies, SIBO, mitochondrial dysfunction, and much more. With this approach, I was able to identify the dysfunction(s) present and give the body the necessary tools it needed to heal itself and return to homeostasis, the way it was originally designed to function. As a result, my patients were getting better and not only better but getting their lives back in the most amazing way! Healing takes time but it is well worth the wait! As I always like to say, "The body is miraculous, given the right tools it can truly heal itself!"
Tell us about your business & why you started it?
I designed a practice that reflects my purpose and intention of true healing, where I can show up as my most authentic self and share my brain, heart, soul and presence with like-minded patients. It nourishes my spirit and is beyond fulfilling to be a part of someone’s health journey and witness the ripple effect of the good that comes from it.
What do you love about being a business owner?
The freedom to do what I love in a way that is meaningful and purposeful to me brings me a tremendous amount of fulfillment and joy.
What type of impact do you hope to have on those you meet and/or who receive your services?
I hope my patients sincerely feel seen and heard by me. I think so many patients are not able to tell their story and there's so much power in not only telling it but sincerely being heard by someone who truly cares. And it is extremely exciting and rewarding to see my patients make tangible, positive improvements with their health.
What advice would you give to yourself from 5 years ago? OR your past self just starting your business?
Trust where you are today because there is a bigger and better plan and purpose for you. You need to be exactly where you are today to get to that destination. There will be many doubts and fears that you will face each day, so acknowledge them and thank them for trying to protect you but keep moving forward! You will also hear a lot of outside noise, discouraging you along the way. Do your best to not hold onto those words. Keep moving forward! You got this! Continue to trust your heart and intuition; it has never steered you wrong before.
What does BEAUTY mean to you?
Such a great question!! Beauty to me is from within. It's shining bright and exuding kindness and confidence but not arrogance. It is simply a presence, a magnetic energy.
Who or what inspires you?
My grandmother, Mary Krieg. She always seemed to do the impossible. As a single mother of three in her 20s she moved down to South Florida from Ohio and paved a beautiful life for her and her children. She was an extremely hard worker and selfless. Whenever she tells her story, I admire her so much because she never dwells on the hardships she faced. God knows there had to have been many (juggling two jobs with three children all by herself). But she did it (she kept moving forward!) and she later became a top, successful real estate agent in Boca Raton. She was driven and passionate! I have asked her before "How did you do it all?" She simply says, “I didn't think about it. I just did it.” She is one of the strongest women I know. A role model to so many.
