HER STORY ⟡ Sarah Steffen

Today, we are meeting with Sarah from The Row Stylebar and Lounge!

Tell us about you and your background: I’ve been doing hair for over 13 years now! I decided to go to school to do hair because I was burnt out from going to college and wasn't really finding anything that was interesting for me to do for the rest of my life. I figured I could go to cosmetology school and work behind the chair while going back to college at NKU but that just never happened so here we are. I worked in three salons prior to opening my own salon in 2019, Tress Salon. We quickly outgrew that 4 chair space and an opportunity presented itself to move one block up to a brand-new build-out! I didn't feel like my time was finished

Tell us about your business and why you started it

The Row is a full-service blowout bar! Basically that just means you can come in and get a blowout using high quality products but you can also add on services to help sort out any issues you have scalp/hair wise. We off deep conditioning treatments, scalp treatments, heavy metal detoxes (my personal fav), and molecular repair. We also offer brow tinting/lamination. One cool thing that we also offer is the option to rent out the whole blowout bar. We’ve done this for wedding parties and it's super fun/convenient with the location and the pictures turn out gorgeous (the natural lighting is insane there). I'm hoping to also start booking fun “get ready's” for girls nights out, bachelorette parties, etc,. The idea for the blowout bar came from a client of mine who was pregnant at the time and asked if I ever just have clients in for a blowout. I quickly realized that there were no blowout bars in NKY so I went home and immediately made the LLC that night. It was a slow burn to get it up and running but I'm so glad that I stuck with it because the space itself holds a soft place in my heart and I just can't imagine not having it in my life.

What do you love about being a business owner?

Well I think the first answer that comes to mind is freedom but to be honest i've never been so strapped down to something in my life lol. But honestly there is nothing better than watching something you've built grow and succeed. Having a business in the beauty industry is the best because clients want to come and see you. They never dread it. I love seeing clients that have been with me since I started and seeing where their lives have taken them. I love the relationships with those clients and the ladies that have chosen to have their career in my salons.

What advice would you give your past self: Slow down and play the long game. You don't need to make everything perfect right away, it'll get there in time. Invest in not only the business but your education. I waited until later on in my career to find other stylists whose work really resonated with me to go learn from. That's the best money that I've ever spent and I wish I had done it sooner.

What does beauty mean to you?

I think beauty is what makes you feel good. It ‘s our clothes, shoes, makeup, hair, skin, our mental health and our physical health. I think it all pertains. I, myself, am a hyper fixator so when I get all excited about some aspect of improving myself I fully commit. And by the end of it i always feel great so that's why in my mind beauty is a general blanket statement.

What would you like The Beauty Boost members to know

That not only am I and my girls are here to help you look great, we are also here to have a good time! Building relationships with our clients is huge in this industry. We want to have fun while teaching you guys a thing or two about hair
