Motivation Falters
Listen, we all possess many goals spanning various aspects of our lives. For me, the majority of my goals focus on fitness, stress management and mindset. For you, those goals can be similar or focus on work, family, friends, nutrition, self-care, time management, travel, finances, etc. This concept isn't novel, and when most of us talk about achieving our goals—or falling short of them—we tend to blame it on our 'motivation'.
How many times have you planned to get into a fitness routine, or planned to start cooking balanced meals, or even planned to pick up a hobby like reading but said to yourself, “I just don't have motivation?” No shame here; we've ALL been there. But I'm going to share with you the most invaluable advice I've received when it comes to fulfilling my goals: you won't always be motivated, so you must be disciplined.
The Power of Discipline
Motivation is a great and powerful tool. I love those days where I wake up feeling overly motivated to conquer my to-do list, run a marathon, cook a meal for 20 friends, and write a novel, but let's be honest, while these days are great, they are far and few between. We just can't expect ourselves to be 100% motivated every single second of every day. However, we can establish discipline. And, ladies, being disciplined, a.k.a., staying consistent, has changed my life.
So here's what I do: I cultivate habits that I strictly stick to regardless of how motivated I feel. So rather than expect myself to feel motivated to get myself to the gym every day, I formulated a routine that works with my schedule so there would be no excuses. Every day, I wake up at 7 a.m., stretch, put on workout clothes, and go to the gym. Are there days I would rather get those extra hours of sleep before my first class? Of course! But do I sleep in and skip my workout? No; I get up and go to the gym because consistency is key, and consistency will help me achieve my fitness goals. And rather than let motivation dictate the effort I put into managing my stress, I crack down every Sunday and write out my meetings, assignments and plans because it's a habit I created to manage my stress, and you know what—it does just that!
And wrapping up, let's look back on our topic about affirmations last week. Tonight, I want you to look at yourself in the mirror and say this affirmation before you go to bed: The habits I create and remain disciplined in are shaping me into the best version of myself.
No matter how big or small your goals are, cultivate habits and incorporate discipline into all areas of your life, and watch how you transform and show up as the best you. And girl, just remember that success comes from what you do constantly. You've got this—start thinking of some powerful habits you can create to reach your utmost potential. I believe in you—believe in yourself.
