HER STORY ⟡ NutriWell by Gabrielle

Hey guys! I’m Gabrielle and I am a Registered Dietitian in Pittsburgh! My mission is to empower women of all ages to escape diet culture and embrace their true selves. I have a passion for educating on nutrition, helping others overcome food rules, and body confidence.

Why did you get started?
My personal struggle with food & my body:
After graduating high school, I decided to live in Italy for a year. At 18, I was having a very hard time adjusting to being away from my family & friends, as well as my ease of communication. Overall, it took a toll on my mental health. I felt incapable of managing my personal boundaries & lost my sense of self-control. With this lack of control, I decided I was going to control food. It was easily taken too far. I ended up developing an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa) very quickly. While I was able to overcome this, regaining my positive relationship with food took a very long time.

Throughout college, I struggled with orthorexia. Although I appeared "healthy", the damaging thoughts I had formed around food and my body stuck with me. All my efforts to be "healthy", or “eat clean”, lead me to begin fearing different food groups, avoiding social outings, and becoming a victim of the misinformation flooding the internet. Innocently, I blurred the line between health-promoting behaviors and excessive health behaviors.

Overcoming food rules & finding myself again:
The more I learned in school, the more passionate I became about healing myself so I could have a positive impact on my patients and clients. I began to relearn how to properly nourish my body so I could confidently help others do the same. And you know what, when you stop listening to diet culture and start living authentically, you realize just how much you are capable of achieving.

Becoming a Dietitian:
Shortly after healing my own relationship with food, I received my Masters in Nutrition & Dietetics and passed my exam to become a Registered Dietitian. I am truly grateful for this experience, which shaped me into who I am today and is reflected in my content and my approach.

Why I started:
I love interacting with people and building long-term connections with my followers, clients, and community. I started my Instagram account during college to share pictures of food/recipes I was developing. Over time, this platform became a place for me to completely be my genuine self and share more about who I am, my passions, and also a space to educate my followers on nutrition in a practical way.

What type of impact do you hope to have on those you meet?
I want people to learn the impact nutrition can have on not only our physical health, but our mental and social. I want them to fully embrace their desires, learn that ALL foods fit into a healthy diet, and never follow a diet again! With social media, it can be hard to know what is right or wrong, and even harder to not compare yourself to others. My goal is to help make things clearer, so those that connect with me can feel confident in their journey toward a healthier self.

What is your favorite piece of advice you've ever received or favorite quote?
“A person grows in beauty whenever they move away from what harms them and into their own power” – Yung Pueblo, Inward

What does BEAUTY mean to you?
Beauty is honoring your boundaries, so you never lose your sense of self-control. It is showing up for yourself and others, deciding who and what you allow into your world, what media you consume – it comes from inner strength, courage, and passion – all a part of elevating your self-image and transforming your life.

What advice would you give your past self just starting your business?
Even the most successful entrepreneurs are still learning as they go. I am absolutely still learning! It is an ongoing process and the best way to learn is to jump right in and never doubt yourself!
